The Phases of Construction of a New Home

The Interior Phase of the Construction includes all of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning. The electrical work is all strictly controlled by the standards for national electrical code. Wiring is made of copper and circuit breakers have completely replaced the old style fuses.

The rough-in of the plumbing is when all of the water and drain lines are added and is strictly controlled by building code. All drain lines are CPCV plastic these days. Its easy to put together and has replaced cast iron in almost all applications.

After the plumbing, and electrical work is completed, there is a framing and electrical inspection. Around this time the vinyl siding is usually started. Then the insulation phase can begin. Insulation can not be done in Suffolk until the siding is on.

The wall insulation is 3 1/2" thick batted spun fiberglass insulation. This carries an R Value of 13 which exceeds the specification for building code.

This image shows garage wall insulation.

The ceiling has 10" thick blown-in, or 6" batted insulation, with an R Value of 30. The ceilings all have blown in insulation with the exception of slopped ceilings, as in a cathedral ceiling. Batted insulation is used there, to prevent shifting and settling.

Drywall is hung, taped and the joints sealed and smoothed.

The knockdown finish is sprayed on the ceilings.

The vinyl floors are installed and the toilets and sinks are installed.

The interior doors and closet doors are hung during the finishing stage.

The interior trim work is installed. The painters come and paint everything. The closets are finished.

The cabinets and wall finishingThe cabinets and counter tops are installed as well as the appliances and carpeting and the trim on the direct vent fireplace at this time.
